New Music - Syme

Okay so it's been a while, and I apologize. I've been studying for my certification which is much harder and longer than I anticipated. I just had a wedding for one of my best friends, which was a blast, and I blew my knee out a few weeks ago. Needless to say it's been interesting!

Anyway, the good folks over at Musebox sent me a album a week or so ago by a band called Syme. First off, they peeked my interest in a few words..."a Bergen five-piece that builds beautiful monsters out of simple synth figures, a bit of guitar, and absolutely darling harmonies." Yeah, that's how they described them to me, and I can't argue with it.

The five-piece band hails from Bergen, Norway, which also gave us the sounds of Annie and Datarock, but that speaks more to electronic-styles. Syme are straight-forward neu-post-rock, and if that isn't redundant I don't know what is. I have to say that I fell in love with these guys almost immediately. They remind me a lot of another of my favorite bands I've posted about ad-nauseam "Beautiful Lunar Landscape." That being said Syme are not redundant themselves, and rather they add to the sounds of other favorites My Bloody Valentine and Slint with textural almost orchestral vibes the likes of Sigur Ros and Aamina. So the band has one album already out ("Swing Swing" - 2005) and is nearing the release of its sophomore release "No Spark, No Heart" due out this fall.

Check 'em out this week at the CMJ festival 10/16 at Ace of Clubs and 10/18 at The Delancy Lounge.
