Scanners - Violence is Golden

Well it seems like a cheery album title…that is to say that “Violence is Golden” the debut from London four-piece Scanners would seem a likely nu-metal or just plain metal album, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. While they do exhibit a sinister persona throughout the bands cover and inlay art, the music retains only a slight murky shadow.

Within the first minute of the album’s first track “Joy” you will be searching the liner notes to check out if it is PJ Harvey is singing. Singer Sarah Daly manages to sound like equal parts PJH and Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), while still coming off as an original. The music follows suit with Matthew Mole and Amina Bates performing dual guitar roles and Tom Hutt behind the kit. It is an album that like the bands influences needs more than a few listens to fully grasp, which is not going to be hard, especially if you like PJ Harvey and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Essential Track
Lowlife
[I hope to post at least one more song tomorrow, my connection is wigging out on me!]
